Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
